It lies southwest of the capital city of San José. From the city of Puriscal, it’s just over an hour to the international airport (SJO) in San José. The Pacific Ocean is also just over an hour away. So, whether it’s shopping or the beach, this rural city is in an ideal location.

The formal name of the city is Santiago de Puriscal. However, everyone calls it Puriscal or even Puris.

At an altitude ranging from 1,000 – 1,100 meters (3,300 – 3,600 feet), the climate is very comfortable day and night. Being at elevation in the Central Valley, there is usually a light breeze. Another plus is that there are fewer insects than at lower, more humid elevations.

With highs from 25°C – 29°C (77°F – 84°F) and lows from 18°C – 24°C (64°F – 75°F), it’s ideal.

The location, between San José and the Pacific, and the altitude, between 1,000 –1,100 meters, offer fantastic Central Valley views ranging from the night lights of the capital city to unforgettable views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the Pacific Ocean. Depending on your specific piece of paradise, you might even get it all. Coupled with brilliant sunrises and stunning sunsets, Puriscal has it all.

Puriscal has just about everything you need at close hand. From banks, lawyers, accountants, architects, and other professions, you’ll find them. Doctors, dentists, pharmacists, chiropractors, masseurs, barbers, beauty salons, mechanics… the list goes on and on.

If you can’t find what you need, you’re just an hour, or less, from the larger urban areas of Santa Ana, Escazu, San José. Heading west, you can spend a day at the beach and be back home in time for dinner.

Puriscal has modern grocery stores, pharmacies, clothing boutiques, shoe stores, hardware stores, toy stores, opticians, jewelers, furniture stores, office supplies, veterinary and agricultural supplies. If Puriscal doesn’t have it, you probably don’t need it.

Puriscal is well known for its friendly, helpful residents. They are hard-working and fun-loving people who are willing to help and offer a pleasant smile at all times.

Rural Traditions

Every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, crafts, and even prepared dishes at the farmer’s market. I routinely purchase a week’s worth of groceries for less than $20.00. It’s a great gathering place where you’ll invariably run into friends and neighbors. It won’t be long before you get to know the vendors, and they’ll get to know what you like.

Part of the charm of this rural community is the country lifestyle in the outlying areas. It is not uncommon to see cowboys on horses, chickens, goats, and cattle grazing contentedly.

You will find many restaurants and sodas offering home-cooked meals, made with fresh, locally grown produce. From burgers to sushi, there’s a place for you.

Many communities host events and festivities with parades, delicious food, impressive livestock, ox carts, and chicharrónes. In fact, Puriscal is well known for cooking the best chicharrón in Costa Rica.

If you are looking for a slower pace, Puriscal may just be what you’re looking for. I half expect to see Sherriff Andy Taylor, Barny Fife, Aunt Bea, or Opie as I walk around. If you want to live in Puriscal, contact me now.
